Working to Stop the Brain Drain

February 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Brain fitness and brain games are becoming popular among older consumers as they try to shore up their memories and stave off dementia. Here are some sites and resources should you want to keep up with the advances in brain science and the way this knowledge is resulting in new products.

PositScience is the company behind the idea of a “plastic” brain and “the Brain Fitness Program.” A PBS special about the program has been running on tv stations around the country.

Cognitive Club Hosted by Posit Science, this is a site for consumers about how to make the most of their brains.

On the Brain  This is the blog of Dr. Michael Merzenich, the “brain” behind Posit Science. Goes more deeply into the scientific underpinnings of the plastic brain theory.

Brain Based Business  This blog is from Dr. Ellen Weber, who directs the MITA Brain Based Renewal Center and focuses on brain-based business practices and business leadership.

BrainAge.com  A website to promote the work of Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, a neuroscientist. Kawashima is the developer of the popular Brain Age games that are played on Nintendo DS, a handheld game system

Recently SmartSilvers, an organization that seeks out technology that may be used by older consumers to improve their quality of life, sponsored a panel discussion called “Emerging Brain Fitness Market: Building Better Brain Power.” A number of experts from this burgeoning field were present to discuss:

  • What results are scientists discovering from the use of Brain Fitness tools?
  • Who will use brain tools and why?
  • What is the market potential for new companies entering the brain fitness market?
  • What kind of brain fitness applications are being developed?

Now an online video is available of this 90-minute discussion. We highly recommend it.
