Ah! My Aching Ribs: The Story of a Senior’s Trip and Fall

January 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

falling.jpgI admit that the press release from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) about their new hotline on balance and how to avoid falls, would not have caught my attention if I had not taken a header down a steep slope into a river last fall. Yep, not a month after my 60 something birthday, while hiking with my family, I lost my balance on a slippery slope and ended up in the river. The rescue by the fire department was the stuff of reality shows and I thought I was really in for something awful. Fortunately, xrays showed no broken bones but I was laid up for a while with severely bruised ribs.

Ok, back to the hotline. According to the APTA, “About one in three seniors above age 65, and nearly one in two seniors over age 80, will fall at least once this year, many times with disastrous consequences. As our nation’s population ages, the rate of falls is rising. Yet, falling and fear of falling may be reduced by physical therapist intervention….”

The release provides the hotline number plus some common sense advice about how to improve one’s balance and a nifty little test you can do to see how balanced you are. Publicizing the hotline in your publication would be a good idea or if you are writing for the mature market, this info would shape up into a good article.
